About the Panasonic NCR2270A 22700 Li-ion Cell 5,635 mAh

The NCR2270A is Panasonic's 22 mm-format cell at 5,635 mAh typical and 5,435 mAh minimum. Panasonic classifies it as high capacity with middle-rate discharge and names its target uses directly: e-assist bicycles, e-motorcycles and karts under light electric vehicles, plus powered equipment and robotics.

Why pack builders specify it

  • 5,635 mAh typical, the largest capacity in this range by a wide margin
  • 21.8 mm diameter against 21 mm for 21700, so fewer cells are needed for a given pack capacity
  • Panasonic classifies it as high capacity with middle-rate discharge, matched to LEV duty
  • Named by Panasonic for e-bikes, e-motorcycles, karts, powered equipment and robotics

Typical applications

  • E-assist bicycles and e-motorcycles – Panasonic's stated LEV application, including pedelecs and karts
  • Robotics and AMRs – Long shift runtime with moderate current draw
  • Cordless garden and powered equipment – Mowers and similar tools where run time dominates
  • Industrial ESS and UPS – High watt-hours per cell reduces cell count and BMS channels

Where it fits

Use the NCR2270A where pack capacity per cell is the constraint and the duty is moderate — LEV, robots, ESS. It is not a high-power cell; Panasonic's mid-rate classification and the absence of a published continuous rating mean high-drain work should go to a Molicel P-series or Samsung 40T. Confirm the maximum continuous discharge against the Panasonic datasheet before you finalise the BMS.

Charging and pack integration

Charge CC-CV to 4.2 V (4.10 V variant for cycle life) within the current limits listed above and stop discharge at 2.5 V. These are unprotected industrial cells: a BMS or protection circuit is required, interconnects must be resistance or laser welded rather than soldered, and cells of different model, batch or state of charge must not be mixed in one pack. Charging below 0 °C is not permitted unless the pack implements a low-temperature charge strategy.

Questions about this cell

Panasonic does not publish one on the product page. Distributors commonly quote 12 A. Confirm against the datasheet before setting pack limits.
5,635 mAh against about 5,000 mAh for a Samsung 50S, in a 21.8 mm rather than 21 mm can, at 74.5 g versus 72 g. Check the holder and busbar layout - 22700 is not a drop-in for 21700.
No. Panasonic classifies it as high capacity with middle-rate discharge. High-drain applications need a different cell.
