BMS & Accessories
Battery management boards, nickel strip, holders and interconnect parts for building and servicing packs.
A battery management system is not an accessory that can be picked off a shelf. It is specified against the pack it protects, and it is supplied as part of a pack project rather than listed as a catalogue line.
What the BMS is responsible for
Per-cell voltage monitoring, over-voltage and under-voltage cut-off, over-current and short-circuit protection, temperature monitoring against separate charge and discharge windows, cell balancing, and state-of-charge and state-of-health estimation. A pack monitored only at its terminals can sit inside its own voltage limit while one cell in the string is already past its ceiling.
Passive versus active balancing
Passive balancing bleeds charge off the highest cells as heat and is sized in tens of milliamps; it corrects slow drift and not much else. Active balancing moves charge between cells and is used where strings are long or cycles are deep. Which one is needed depends on how far the cells are expected to drift, which is largely a function of how well they were matched before welding.
What has to be specified
String voltage and cell count, continuous and peak current, balance current, number of temperature sensors, protection thresholds, communication interface, and the standard the end product is assessed to.
What we need to quote it
- String voltage and cell count
- Continuous and peak current
- Balance method and balance current
- Number of temperature sensors and their thresholds
- Communication interface
- Standard the end product is assessed to
