Molicel UN38.3, IEC 62133 and UL Documents Filed

Stacked manufacturer product data sheets with a verification mark

Fifteen transport and safety documents have been filed against Molicel models in the catalogue: seven UN38.3 test summaries, six IEC 62133 certificates and three UL certificates under file number MH27672. They are linked from the Downloads panel on the product page of each model they cover, alongside the data sheet.

What each document is for

DocumentWhat it establishesWho usually asks for it
UN38.3 test summaryThe cell passed the eight transport tests (altitude, thermal, vibration, shock, external short, impact, overcharge, forced discharge). Required before air or sea freight.Freight forwarders, carriers
IEC 62133Safety of the sealed cell and battery for portable applications โ€” the standard most product safety files reference.Product safety engineers, certifiers
UL (file MH27672)North American recognition of the cell, referenced by file number when a pack is submitted for UL listing.North American buyers, AHJ reviewers

The distinction matters because the three documents are not interchangeable. A UN38.3 summary answers "can this be shipped"; it says nothing about whether the cell is safe in your product. IEC 62133 and UL answer the second question, and which one you need depends on the market you are shipping into.

Coverage, and one caveat on the UL documents

UN38.3 and IEC 62133 documents are filed per model and cover INR18650-M35A, INR18650-M30A, INR18650-P26A, INR18650-P28A, INR18650-P22S and INR21700-P42A. Where a model in the catalogue has no certificate on file, the product page says so rather than linking to a neighbouring model's document.

The three UL certificates are file-level documents issued under file number MH27672. Each one carries its own list of covered models in the document body. Until each model has been checked against that list, we quote the file number and refer you to the certificate body for coverage โ€” we do not put a specific model into a UL claim that the document does not name. If your submission needs a named model, ask us and the check is done against the PDF before we answer.

How to check a document yourself

Three things are worth verifying on any certificate a supplier sends you, and they take about a minute:

  • The model designation on the certificate matches the cell you are buying, character for character, including the format prefix.
  • The certificate has not expired, and the issuing body is named on the document rather than implied by a logo.
  • The scope covers what you are claiming โ€” a cell certificate is not a pack certificate, and a document issued for one factory is not automatically valid for another.

The longer version of that check, including what each standard covers and which ones apply where, is on the transport and safety documentation guide.

Models without documents

Samsung SDI, LG Energy Solution and Panasonic do not publish downloadable cell data sheets, and no certificate documents are on file for those three brands here. Their models stay marked pending in the catalogue. UN38.3 test summaries and MSDS for those brands are available on request per model, and we will tell you when a value comes from a public source rather than from a manufacturer document.
