About the Samsung SDI INR21700-53G 21700 Li-ion Cell 5,300 mAh

The INR21700-53G is the capacity ceiling of Samsung's 21700 line at the 5,300 mAh class, with a 5,140 mAh minimum on both the standard and 1 C discharge tests. The 1,000-cycle rating to 80% comes with conditions attached — charge to 4.15 V rather than 4.2 V and end discharge at 3.0 V rather than 2.5 V — which is a trade worth taking in stationary storage.

Why pack builders specify it

  • 5,140 mAh minimum, the highest capacity figure in this Samsung range
  • 1,000 cycles to 80% retention when charged to 4.15 V and discharged to 3.0 V
  • About 19.2 Wh per cell, so fewer cells and fewer BMS channels per kWh of pack
  • Sleeve version measures 21.30 mm diameter and 70.70 mm height, inside the standard 21700 envelope

Typical applications

  • Home and commercial ESS – Wall-mounted and rack modules sized by kWh, where the 1,000-cycle rating applies
  • Long-range e-bike packs – Fewer cells for a given range target, at the cost of peak current
  • Portable energy storage – High watt-hours per cell in a compact enclosure
  • Smart terminals and industrial handhelds – Long runtime between charges at moderate draw

Where it fits

Specify the 53G where stored energy per cell dominates and duty stays near 1 C. The 15.9 A maximum discharge current is explicitly not guaranteed for cycle life, so size continuous duty to the 1 C condition the cycle rating was measured at, or move to the 50S or 40T.

Charging and pack integration

Charge CC-CV to 4.2 V (4.15 V for cycle life) within the current limits listed above and stop discharge at 2.5 V (3.0 V for cycle life). These are unprotected industrial cells: a BMS or protection circuit is required, interconnects must be resistance or laser welded rather than soldered, and cells of different model, batch or state of charge must not be mixed in one pack. Charging below 0 °C is not permitted unless the pack implements a low-temperature charge strategy.

Questions about this cell

Samsung lists 15,900 mA as the maximum discharge current at 3 C and notes it does not guarantee cycle life. The 1,000-cycle rating is measured at 1 C discharge.
4.15 V is the charge voltage used for the cycle-life rating. Charging to 4.2 V gives more usable capacity per cycle but falls outside the tested 1,000-cycle envelope.
About 19.2 Wh at 5.3 Ah and 3.63 V nominal. A 16S4P build is roughly 57.6 V nominal and 1.2kWh.
