About the Panasonic NCR18650GA 18650 Li-ion Cell 3,450 mAh

The NCR18650GA is Panasonic's high-energy 18650: 3,450 mAh typical, 3,350 mAh minimum, 12.4 Wh per cell and 240 Wh/kg at the bare cell. Panasonic's own mobility data gives 8 A maximum continuous discharge — a figure many resellers inflate to 10 A, which is worth knowing when you are setting BMS limits.

Why pack builders specify it

  • 3,450 mAh typical and 12.4 Wh, among the highest energy figures available in 18650
  • 698 Wh/L volumetric and 240 Wh/kg gravimetric at the bare cell
  • Panasonic NNP electrode technology with HRL heat-resistance layer for safety margin
  • Stable performance across a wide discharge-rate and temperature range, per Panasonic mobility data

Typical applications

  • E-bikes and pedelecs – Panasonic lists e-bike and pedelec among its cylindrical Li-ion applications
  • UPS and backup power – High energy density in a standardised holder with long service life
  • Professional power and garden tools – Listed by Panasonic among primary cylindrical applications
  • Portable terminals and GPS devices – Panasonic names portable POS terminals and GPS devices explicitly
  • Medical carts and monitors – Where long runtime and a stable discharge curve matter more than peak current

Where it fits

Use the GA where stored energy per cell is the constraint and current stays at or under 8 A. The BD trades 270 mAh for a longer cycle life and no SOH management. Above 8 A continuous, neither Panasonic cell is the right choice — look at the Molicel P-series.

Charging and pack integration

Charge CC-CV to 4.2 V within the current limits listed above and stop discharge at 2.5 V. These are unprotected industrial cells: a BMS or protection circuit is required, interconnects must be resistance or laser welded rather than soldered, and cells of different model, batch or state of charge must not be mixed in one pack. Charging below 0 °C is not permitted unless the pack implements a low-temperature charge strategy.

Questions about this cell

Panasonic specifies 8 A maximum continuous discharge. 10 A appears widely in reseller listings and is achievable without a temperature cut, but 8 A is the figure Panasonic publishes.
Once state of health reaches 70%, the charge voltage is reduced from 4.2 V to 4.15 V to extend service life. The BMS has to implement this for GA and PF cells.
Heat Resistance Layer, a Panasonic safety layer in the cell. The GA is listed with NNP electrode technology and HRL.
