IEC 62619: the standard stationary and industrial packs are assessed against

IEC 62619 is the safety standard for secondary lithium cells and batteries used in industrial applications. It is the reference for stationary storage and industrial equipment, where IEC 62133 for portable equipment does not apply.

Field What it says
What it is Safety requirements for secondary lithium cells and batteries for use in industrial applications
Applies to Stationary storage, uninterruptible supply, industrial equipment and similar fixed-duty installations
How it differs from IEC 62133 Written for industrial rather than portable use, and it reaches into the battery system rather than stopping at the cell
System level Covers considerations such as the behaviour of the battery management system and thermal propagation — check the current edition for how each is specified
What the buyer receives A test report naming the cell or battery type assessed
What to check Whether the assessment was done on the cell alone or on the assembled battery, and against which edition

Specification basis: the standard text and its current edition. Figures and dates quoted on this page are limited to what each document states, and no certificate is claimed beyond what is held on file.

The portable / industrial split again

An energy storage cabinet is not portable equipment, and a report written for portable equipment does not answer an industrial specification. If the end use is a rack, a container or a fixed installation, this is the standard that tends to be named.

Why the system matters here

Industrial installations are assessed as systems rather than as loose cells. The standard reaches into how the battery management system behaves under fault conditions and how a thermal event is handled, which is a different question from whether an individual cell survives a short circuit.

The practical implication: a cell-level report does not by itself settle the compliance question for a cabinet. What the integrator does with the cells is part of the assessment.

Before you accept a document

How to check it

  • Confirm whether the assessment was done at cell level or at battery level.
  • Check the edition the report was issued against — system-level clauses have been revised over time.
  • Ask what the intended end application was stated as in the report.

Questions

IEC 62619 in practice

Does IEC 62619 replace IEC 62133?+
No. They cover different application classes, and the right one depends on whether the equipment is portable or industrial.
Is it required for residential storage?+
Requirements depend on the market and on the installer's specification. Ask which standard the end market expects before ordering cells.
Does it cover the BMS?+
The standard addresses battery system behaviour, including the management system. The exact clauses depend on the edition.

This page describes how each standard is applied in practice when lithium cells are bought and shipped. It is a summary for procurement, not the standard text itself, and it does not replace your carrier's acceptance check or your own compliance review.
